Any coach in the world could become a hero for 70 Million people just by playing 2 decent games or maybe even 5 out of 7. Depending on other results, if Iran beats North Korea away and Emirates at home, it's game on and Iran can still qualify for the World Cup, either by even finishing second or by finishing third and taking the long route. The important games would be against either Bahrain, Uzbekistan or Qatar, the team that finishes 3rd in the other group and eventually 2 games against Oceania winners. There's probably no easier task in the world right now for coaching a World Cup team in 2010. Most importantly, he could become a hero for 70 Million people. Ask Valdeir Vieira, ask Tomislav Ivic. They are still heroes in Iran, although Vieira as a coach didn't win a single National Team game and Ivic didn't coach Iran in any official game. What's more thrilling than that? Most importantly, the coach got nothing to lose. If he doesn't make it, it was Ali Daei's fault or the Iranian Federation's fault or someone elses fault as right now we're out anyway. So, heads the coach wins, tails IFF loses.
Funny enough though, the most likely candidate to take over is the only coach in the world who can lose, namely Mohammad Mayelikohan. If he doesn't make it, then we knew it all along anyway. On the other hand, Mayelikohan has more lives than a cat, so he will get some other coaching position at some point anyway.
