With 106 points, Australia edges Iran out of last place

BEIJING- Australia dominated Iran 106-68 in their Men's Basketball group A preliminary on August 14.

Both teams entered this game winless at the bottom of group A, but by outscoring the Iranian team in every quarter, Australia lifted itself to a 1-2 tournament record and kept its quarterfinal hopes alive.

Australia started the game strongly by taking the first quarter 28-15. They then put their win beyond doubt with a halftime score of 53-29. They extended their lead to 75-48 after the third quarter and eventually won the game 106-68.

Iran was beat in the paint, where they managed to put up 26 points while Australia smoked them with 54 inside points. Eighteen of Australia's points came from fast breaks, and the team's biggest lead of the game was 43 points.

Australia had five players in double-digits, led by forward Brad Newley who netted the game-high 24 points. Milwaukee Bucks' Andrew Bogut dropped 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 17 minutes.

On the losing side, captain Mohammadsamad Nikkhah scored 23 for Iran, and center Hamed Ehadadi was true to form as one of the tournament's top rebounders, pulling a game-high eight rebounds and contributing 15 points.
