In a very one sided match in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium, Iran scored 7, and could have scored another 10 if they taken all their chances. Ali Daei opened the scoring early in the first half. Daei made it 2-0 after 20 minutes, and he completed his hat-trick just before the half hour mark. The first half finished 3-0, with Iran in full control.
Laos tried to push Iran back in the early parts of the second half, but Iran broke lose, and scored 4 goals in 12 minutes. Daei made it 4-0 in the 58th minute, and Nekounam (63, 72) and Borhani (68) made it 7-0. Iran created a lot more chances in the final 20 minutes but the game finished 7-0.
In other matches, China became the highest profile casualty in Asian Zone qualification to 2006 World Cup, despite beating Hong Kong 7-0. The result was not enough as Kuwait beat Malaysia 6-1 at home to go through on goal difference.
Korea are also through, as they beat Maldives with an unconvincing score of 2-0 at home.
Iran is seeded 4th after Korea, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. Bahrain, Kuwait, and Uzbekistan complete the list of the 8 qualifiers to the final round of qualifiers. These 8 teams will be divided in to two groups of 4, with the top two teams qualifying to the World Cup in Germany.
